This blog is going to be about the picturesque city of Penang located on the NorthWest of Malaysia , it comprises of mainland Seberang Perai and Penang Island. Its a good destination to experience true malaysian culture combining city and beach vibes. Penang is mainly known for the food by localites and it's easy to see queues miles long at popular food stalls scattered around the city. I am yet to do a food tour of Penang as I was with my family, I covered certain popular landmarks but shall definitely be back for some food!
p.s Shall attach details on getting there below
We set off to Penang from Kuala Lumpur and reached within 4 hours to grumbling stomachs. A quick pit stop at the local mamak greeted us with local cuisine. The food was average which did dampen our expectations, I would suggest checking out "Penang Foodies" which is a Facebook page that contains all the inside scoop on popular stalls and restaurants in Penang as well as upcoming food festivals. The weather was extremely hot sometime in the afternoon but before checking in we decided to check out the famous mural art of Penang which can be found on every nook and corner of the local streets. Its a pleasant walk to capture the beauty of ancient buildings that remain untouched and friendly locals direct you to the specific ones you would like to see.

This one is one of the popular ones "the boy on the bike" |
Now you can choose to stay on the mainland as you have close access to several art galleries, museums and markets. However if you prefer to stay on the island (closer to the beach) I would recommend Bayview beach resort for its wonderful location and private beach access. The mountain view from our room was stunning and it was really spacious for a family room. We could easily unwind and get some much needed sleep without feeling cramped.
Although if you are on a budget you may choose several other hostels and bnb alongside the road which paves right alongside the beach.

This was the king size bed and on the other size we were provided two single bed. The family room cost was MYR 550 (with a certain discount) |

That amazing mountain view could be enjoyed with a coffee and in bed :p |

Now if you head on to the back of the resort it's easy to spend an entire day in the hotel itself. It has its very own beach with several activities such as horse back riding, snorkelling, banana boat etc however they are way overpriced compared to other beaches in Penang. The sunrise view is one of the best as the sea stretches into the horizon. The resorts own swimming pool and garden area is rather large catering to guests lounging by the palm trees looking out to the ocean. Honestly its really relaxing to just plop down on the lounge chairs read a book and have a drink straight off the menu as they have about two restaurants right nearby.
I shall talk about the activities in Penang in the next blog do let me know if you would like added content or info. Cheers!

Renting a car for a weekend and driving at your own pace is preferably the best way to head to Penang as there are so many beautiful areas to discover. Its a 4 hour drive with one toll if you leave from Kuala Lumpur. We rented a family van with a driver for 3days 2 nights. Cost :- MYR 2000 ($501.82)

Flights from KLIA airport to Penang are quite a time saver. It takes an hour. Cost:- MYR 86 ($21.5) one way
